PERSPECTIVE – Augusta Read Thomas is the composer-mentor for the DeGaetano Composition Institute, an ambitious program for emerging composers founded by the Orchestra of St Luke’s. She talks with Gail Wein about this unique institute, what it takes to mentor younger composers, and how she helps them tap into their imaginations.
In 2019, Orchestra of St. Luke’s launched the institute, which is funded by the estate of the composer Robert DeGaetano, who died a few years earlier.
The well-funded year-long program will continue for at least 20 more years, with four composers selected to participate each year.
This year’s institute culminates in a concert of the world premiere performances of works by 2026 fellows Grace Ann Lee, Ben Rieke, Xingyue Song, and Justin Weiss. The Orchestra of St. Lukes will present the program on July 28 at the Dimenna Center in New York City.
