He served as music critic for the Akron Beacon Journal, The Pittsburgh Press, and The Plain Dealer (Cleveland). He is the author of The Cleveland Orchestra Story: "Second to None." Prior to becoming a music critic, he was a French horn player and participant in the Aspen and Marlboro music festivals.
