Adès Leads His New Violin Concerto
Thomas Adès leads the London Symphony Orchestra in the U.K. premiere of his new violin concerto, Air, with Anna Sophie Mutter as soloist. Pärt Meets the 16th Century at Spoleto USA
In a May 31 program, the Spoleto Festival USA Chorus blends the atmospheric music of Arvo Pärt’s The Deer’s Cry and The Woman with the Alabaster Box with two early-music masterpieces: Josquin des Prez’s Missa Pange Lingua and Heinrich Schütz’s St. Matthew Passion. US Premiere For Saariaho’s ‘Innocence’
Innocence, an opera by the late Finnish composer Kaija Saariaho, will receive its U.S. premiere June 1-21 at the San Francisco Opera. The story, told in eight languages through Sofi Oksanen’s libretto, deals with the long-term emotional consequences of a school shooting in Helsinki. New Production of Unfinished Mussorgsky
Mussorgsky wrote both the music and the libretto for his opera Chowanschtschina (Kovanshchina) but died before he could complete it. The Staatsoper Berlin’s new production June 2-24 will use the version by Shostakovich with an ending by Stravinsky, and the whole score has been re-orchestrated.
