The New York Philharmonic has commissioned a new work by Atlanta-based composer Joel Thompson. The world premiere, conducted by music director Jaap van Zweden, will take place March 21-24. Tan Dun’s Trombone Concerto, subtitled Three Muses in Video Game and inspired by three ancient Chinese instruments, will receive its New York premiere with soloist Joseph Alessi, the NY Phil’s principal trombone. Mendelssohn’s Scottish Symphony No. 3 is the final work on the program.
