Sarah Gibson was commissioned to write to make this mountain taller by a 30-orchestra consortium under the aegis of the Virginia B. Toulmin Foundation. When the Pittsburgh Symphony plays it Nov. 24-26, it will be only the work’s second performance (the first was with the Sarasota Symphony in the spring of 2023). This program, conducted by music director Manfred Honeck, welcomes Randall Goosby as the soloist for Korngold’s Violin Concerto. Family Waltzes and Polkas of Johann Strauss, Jr. let Honeck pay tribute to his native Austria.
