Classical Voice North America is the web journal of the Music Critics Association of North America. Its purpose is three-fold: 1) to provide expert reviews, commentary and reportage by professional music journalists from across the continent, particularly in areas where classical music coverage has been curtailed or eliminated by traditional publications; 2) to cover national trends from a regional perspective, with MCANA members “on the ground” contributing reports from their communities and 3) to offer MCANA members a global digital showcase that capitalizes on the rapid expansion of online, mobile and multimedia tools. Unless otherwise stated, all contributions are from members of the MCANA. All authors are responsible for content and accuracy; views expressed do not necessarily represent the views of the CVNA editorial team or the MCANA board.
About the Music Critics Association of North America:
The Music Critics Association of North America, incorporated in 1957, is the only North American organization devoted solely to professional classical music critics. Current members include critics at the New York Times, Baltimore Sun, Chicago Tribune, Financial Times, Los Angeles Times, Montreal Gazette, New Yorker, San Francisco Chronicle, Toronto Star and Washington Post; regular contributors to the Wall Street Journal, Gramophone, Musicalamerica.com, Opera News and Opera (UK); as well as program annotators, broadcasters and radio producers.
Primary activities:
- Web Journal offering online outlets for members – News, reviews, issues in the arts, upcoming events, member blogs and profiles.
- Annual Conferences – Panels/workshops in tandem with summer festivals, professional conferences or other activities
- MCANA Institutes – Educational seminars that promote high standards of music criticism and provide professional training. Recent examples include institutes in conjunction with the New World Symphony and the Cliburn Competition, past seminars in Dresden and Bayreuth, and workshops in social media. Foundation grants or in-kind support from performing arts organizations usually enable MCANA to cover all or part of institute expenses for participants.
