Welcome to Classical Gas, a new podcast by radio host and producer Gail Wein, hosted by Classical Voice North America. The focus of this Episode 1 is Charles Ives (1874-1954), who has been the subject of sesquicentennial celebrations.

“Ives was interested in rubbing consonant music with dissonant music, so there was a feeling of jostling,” says pianist and podcast guest Donald Berman, president of the Charles Ives Society, in his discussion with Wein. “He felt that his music should not come easily.”

Wein chose the name Classical Gas because of its multiple implications: “Gas could be fuel or fun. It’s also a subtle reference to those of us of a certain age who recall the 1970s earworm guitar instrumental by Mason Williams.” Here is her inaugural podcast:

“I considered several formats for this project, but in the end I realized that interviewing is my passion and my superpower,” Wein says. “I honed this skill through decades of work as a radio host and producer, combined with my innate curiosity and the fact that I simply love talking with people. Thanks for listening!”
