NYC: Dilworth’s Bound for Glory a Canterbury Choral commission

November 18, 2017

When the African-American composer Harry Burleigh was attending the National Conservatory of Music in the early 20th century, he is said to have introduced Antonín Dvořák to a number of African-American spirituals that inspired aspects of Dvořák’s Symphony No. 9, From the New World. To celebrate this relationship, the Canterbury Choral Society commissioned composer Rollo Dilworth to write Bound for Glory, which will have its world premiere at Carnegie Hall on Nov. 18.  This new work looks to the spirituals “Goin’ Home” and “Deep River” and extends their theme. The program’s centerpiece is Mahler’s Eighth Symphony, led by Jonathan De Vries.
