Minneapolis: Reformation @ 500 honored
November 2, 2017
In 1517, Martin Luther nailed to the door of the Wittenberg cathedral his list of 95 ideas for improving the Church; unintentionally, that act spearheaded a revolution. The Minnesota Orchestra, conducted by Osmo Vänskä, marks the 500th anniversary of this occasion on Nov. 2-4 with music inspired by the Lutheran Reformation. Included is the world premiere of Sebastian Currier’s Re-formation, a work for chorus (the Minnesota Chorale) and orchestra that acknowledges both the spiritual and musical importance of the Reformation with quotes from Bach and Mendelssohn and a libretto by Sarah Manguso. Bach’s Orchestral Suite No. 2 and Mendelssoh’s Symphony No. 5, “Reformation,” will also be performed.
