NYC: Bernstein’s Philharmonic festival begins
In his first New York Philharmonic appearance since leaving his post as the orchestra’s music director, Alan Gilbert will open the season-long festival, Bernstein’s Philharmonic, on October 25–28 and 31, 2017. Over the course of the 2017-18 season, the NY Phil will play all three of Bernstein’s symphonies beginning with his 1942 Symphony No. 1, Jeremiah, at these concerts. The programmatic work follows the Biblical story of the prophet Jeremiah with texts from the Book of Lamentations sung by mezzo-soprano Kelley O’Connor. When Bernstein first led Jeremiah in New York City, with the Philharmonic at Carnegie Hall in 1944, Jennie Tourel was the soloist. (1943 Bernstein photo, The Library of Congress)
